Big Mama's Story

Who was Big Mama?
Big Mama was the matriarch of a colony of roughly 23 community cats that lived on the residential property of a home that was foreclosed on in June of 2020; the cats were subsequently abandoned. We spent many months caring for them to gain their trust in our efforts to TNR and adopt out the adoptable. All of the cats in the colony looked to Big Mama and she was incredibly affectionate to all of them. Unfortunately, her trusting nature became her downfall when the new owners signed on the house; within hours of closing on the home, the new owner killed Big Mama and left her body out near where they were fed with a sign that said "QUIT FEEDING STRAYS ON OUR PROPERTY". It was devastating to everyone. We sent her off for a necropsy [animal autopsy] which showed her death was non-accidental blunt force trauma resulting in a severed spinal cord. The force was applied from above. No other injuries were present. Despite our relentless pursuit of justice through law enforcement and the County prosecutor, no charges were brought against this man since "he wouldn't admit it". In the meantime, we decided to double our efforts to trap and relocate the remaining colony. Rehoming community cats is not an easy task- many rescues are overwhelmed and unable to take on additional cats. And so, Big Mama's House was born. A safe, loving place of refuge for the lost, unwanted or wild where we care for and love them until we find a home or barn where they can live out their lives safely.
